The
SolaRola Adventure 2008. On Wednesday May 21st
a fleet of solar powered vehicles will set out from the Victoria
Tower Gardens, Westminster arriving on the 28th May at the Royal
Bath and West Show in Somerset.
Each vehicle will be powered by solar energy and largely driven
by disabled drivers. On the way fundraising events will be held
and collections made in support of six charities: The Calvert Trust
on Exmoor, the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, Help for Heroes
and related Armed Forces Charities, Injured Jockeys Fund, Riding
for the Disabled, and The Southern Spinal Injuries Trust. Once at
the Bath and West Show the vehicles will join the Eco Zone and parade
on arrival at the Show.
The SolaRola vehicles have been sponsored to take
part in the Adventure by the Moss Solar Trust, Mulberry, the Renewable
Energy Systems Group, Yeo Valley Organic and one anonymous donor.
Each has sponsored a Tramper powered wheelchair which has been converted
to solar power. Moss Solar is providing several additional solar
powered vehicles and a solar charging station mounted on the SB
Collinda. Many other organisations and individuals have given generously
in time and money to support the endeavour.
Elizabeth, Lady Vallance, High Sheriff of Greater London will start
the Adventure in London. The cavalcade will be led by Annie Maw
the High Sheriff of Somerset, who has chosen to support sustainable
transport during her year in office. The explorer and writer, Robin
Hanbury Tennison, together with other well known personalities and
supporters will accompany the teams of drivers as they progress
towards Somerset.
One of the SolaRolas taking part in the SolaRola
Adventure will be driven by West Country wheelchair athlete, Sarah
Piercy, who won the London Wheelchair Marathon in 2000.
